Through a series of flashbacks, four Chinese women born in America and their respective mothers born in feudal China explore their pasts.

In the sequel, the mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood and identity.

A retired and widowed Chinese master chef Chu and his family live in modern day Taipei, Taiwan. He lives with his three attractive daughters, all of whom are unattached.
