Movie where small cars driving in braids

After losing her mother, a young woman named Sofia infiltrates a powerful family to seek revenge for those they have harmed.

In an era before in-car movies and video games, four sisters squeeze into the back of the family car for a long journey. While the parents keep a steady watch on the road ahead, restlessness gradually gives way to mayhem in the car’s close quarters. Just before the ride becomes unbearable, the sisters are inspired to combine their creative energy. Suddenly, the big drive becomes an even bigger adventure.

Two protagonists riding around a set in vintage cars, arriving at different locations reminiscent of those in old Hollywood movies.

“I don’t drive, but I know people who’ll drive 100 metres to go to the shops. Our society is obsessed with the car, with coming and going, getting somewhere. I used very intricate matting, some shaped like knives. I wanted the cars to slice each other in two, creating a kind of hurdy gurdy atmosphere…an abstract rushing to and fro, going nowhere. The first half of the film is silent. The second half, a grainy dupe of the same images, has sound and is far more urgent and aggressive.” (Paul Winkler)
