A young girl becomes convinced the drowning of her best friend was actually caused by the sting of a rare jellyfish.

Jellyfish is a coming-of-age film set in a tiny Muslim fishing village in Borneo. Danice, a fourteen year old fisherwoman and breadwinner for her family, tastes first love with Riya - an alluring transgender woman who arrives in the village one day. However, Danica's desire becomes complicated when she shockingly discovers that it is her father that Riya wants.

Based on 16-year-old writer Sarie Hinakura’s award winning story Jellyfish is centered around two adolescent girls disconnected from their immediate environment of school and mates. They first get together while staring into a jellyfish tank at a local aquarium. The relationship that ensues eventually faces tension from the divergent personalities of the two protagonists, one of whom explores a heterosexual relationship with a fellow student. Jealousy and the wrath of a lover spurned are inevitable spillovers.

The Jellyfish employs a variety of experimental approaches, combining stop-motion and pixilation techniques, freely mixing black and white photography of beach landscapes, objects and people – along with some drawings – to build a poetic, very textured montage, eliding the real and the surreal, the beautiful and the eerie, the spirited and the deadly. Figures and objects are isolated, linked together only by their presence on a beach, all exposed to direct or indirect threats. The different jellyfish are as much at threat – washing up dead, stranded in the desolate landscape – as they are a threat – appearing suddenly and making people vanish.

Jelly is a short film about a teenage girl who undergoes initiation into her school's new cult as a vehicle to explore tokenism and exploitation in mainstream, disingenuous feminist spaces.

Jellyfish is a cinematic novel; a meditative approach to talk about notions of gender by translating cognitive knowledge and literary elements into filmic narrative. The film depicts two types of characters: inhabitants of the fictional planet of gender utopian society that are gender fluid, and real characters who find themselves outside of cisnormativity. It offers another way of seeing gender with its possibility to float between different forms without limitations and restrictions.
