By trailing a solitary character who roams the land and communes with the dead, the film serves as an elegy to a richly layered site on the verge of rupture.

A crooked lawyer wakes up in a hotel room unable to recall how he got there, and unaware that he is actually in Purgatory. At midnight a strange visitor arrives.

Andrea, a grieving Chicana mother, confronts an uninvited family member before her Día de los Muertos celebration. By night's end, death offers her a choice that she couldn't make in life.
