Guy brings Paton check to widow and falls in love

An epic love story centered around an older man who reads aloud to a woman with Alzheimer's. From a faded notebook, the old man's words bring to life the story about a couple who is separated by World War II, and is then passionately reunited, seven years later, after they have taken different paths.

Lawyer Pat's first encounter with Wasu, an enthusiastic politician of a newer generation, doesn't go so smoothly. Fate keeps putting them in each others paths, however, and they ultimately end up working together investigating a case concerning a powerful figure, sparking a transformation in their relationship.

Pretty Patience Thompson, a "girl with a singing soul," lives with her cold-hearted and avaricious father, Jeff Thompson, on their Indiana farm. Her life of drudgery is brightened by John, the hired hand, but when he asks for her hand in marriage, the old man flies into a rage and discharges him. Soon an aged but wealthy widower courts Patience, and although she still loves John, "Old Jeff" orders her to marry the widower, claiming that a father's will is the law.

Pope and Pat literally run into each other when they first meet. On the day Pope returns from overseas, he angers a taxi driver because he cannot remember where his stepmother and half-sister live. As they fight, Pope is pushed into the path of Pat's car. Believing that she has hit him, and feeling guilty, Pat takes Pope to the hospital and helps him find his way home. Pope is rather impressed by her trusting nature and insistence to help even a stranger. He already starts to like her. However, both part ways not asking each other's name.

Dick Tavish, a young New Yorker, decides that there is money in cows, and he buys a western ranch. When the novelty has worn off he decided there is monotony as well. Then he falls in love with a girl on a calendar, and life takes on a new interest, particularly after he discovers who the girl is. The fact that her uncle swindled him on the ranch does not matter. He figures he can take care of the uncle, and he does, but not until he has been forced to masquerade as a woman, and have half the men at a fashionable resort fall in love with him.

John Mackley is in the hands of a money-lender, and a broken leg prevents him from meeting a note when due. He succeeds in putting off the payment until a future date, in the hope that better times will come in the interim. His wife and daughter, Lucy, comprise his family. Lucy, just budding into womanhood, has formed an attachment for a young man, who had rendered herself and mother a little service one day. They have met several times and love has become mutual. She knows nothing of his avocation or his past, only that he is living in the neighborhood.

After an argument with his wife in which nosy neighbors and police intervene, Pat feigns suicide by drowning to get sympathy.

A young man is elected by a small village to be its parson. As part of his duties, he is required to marry the widow of the parson before him. This poses two problems--first, the widow is old enough to be his grandmother, and second, he is already engaged to another woman.
