On a rainy London night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix has a chance meeting with Henry Miles, husband of his ex-mistress Sarah, who abruptly ended their affair two years before. Bendrix's obsession with Sarah is rekindled; he succumbs to his own jealousy and arranges to have her followed.

The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway and Alison Lockhart after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher with one novel published (book entitled A Person who Visits a Place) and he is struggling to write a second book. He is happily married with four children, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of the tragic death of her child. The story of the affair is told separately, complete with distinct memory biases, from the male and female perspectives.

Adam has a hard life. His wife cheats on him and he can't find a job. Then his wife gets him a job as a private detective at her friend's company. There he is put on the case of Bert's wife, who is Adam's wife's lover. When Adam enters Bert's house for the purpose of observation, he gets lost on the floor and thus catches Fanny, whose husband is in the process of screwing Bert's wife. The entanglements get wilder and wilder and in the end the cheaters are the cheated.

Joanna Martin, a mid-life journalist, is investigating a marriage agency organizing white marriages. She uses her sister's identity to infiltrate.

Bartender Joey, who prefers to have affairs with married women, seduces Joan. She falls in love with him and leaves her husband, agreeing to work as a prostitute for Joey so they can get married. Joey continues to recruit for his prostitution ring and Joan, aware that she is just being used, holds out on him. Joey beats her, sending her to the hospital and subsequent police investigation leads to her arrest.

Adam feels his readers' pain, and eventually, he takes an assignment to meet with Faye Doyle, who is exasperated by her crippled husband. When Faye tries to seduce Adam, he must choose between his job and his girl.

Ji-ho regrets marriage with her selfish, withholding husband. She is desperate for a real relationship and by chance falls for a man who is exhausted from his constant lonely state. It turns out that the man is her husband's colleague, but she continues to enjoy herself anyway. Her husband returns home from a business trip and witnesses something he didn't expect to see.
