There follows his frantic hunt to uncover the truth behind the murder: the action moves to the streets of New York as the police scour the city in pursuit. But the cab drivers of Manhattan join forces to aid the desperate fugitive, until the solution is finally revealed in a sudden and bizarre end to the mystery.

The "black robe" in the title of this suspense film belongs to a female lawyer, Florence Nat who has just lost a case in which she defended Simon Risler, a man wrongly accused of murder. Risler escapes before he can be put in prison, and seeks help from attorney Nat in finding the real killer, partly by going after the police inspector who framed him in the first place. A retired surgeon, in the process of setting up a drug rehab clinic gets involved in solving Risler's case, and soon the solution seems to be pointing to high-ranking figures with every desire and ample means to keep the truth well-hidden.

A woman named Jules flees her apartment. After she runs down the stairs a flash of light happens causing a table and chair to be pulled towards it. As she reaches the sidewalk and looks around a flash occurs behind the camera when Jules is looking towards it. Her eyes become filled with dark grey clouds before another flash occurs and she is flung into the path of a moving car with her head ending up under the wheel. A man in the other apartment, Ian, hears the commotion from his apartment and grabs his phone before taking a picture of Jules's corpse.
