Paid $20 for child bride

When her father enlists to fight for the British in WWI, young Sara Crewe goes to New York to attend the same boarding school her late mother attended. She soon clashes with the severe headmistress, Miss Minchin, who attempts to stifle Sara's creativity and sense of self-worth.

Mal-soon is a tough granny in a shanty town in Busan. In front of her, 12-year-old Gong-ju appears with her baby sister Jin-ju on her back. “The Bride Price” follows the story of a barely educated spare parts dealer who cuts off his wife’s family from their lives after he was made to pay through his nose for her.

This guerrilla-style drama exposes the harsh reality of money-driven child marriages in China. The Chinese government wants to keep the subject of this film hidden, but it's undeniable that arranged marriages and bride-buying still exist in China's poorer provinces. The filmmakers witnessed these practices firsthand, through their own family members. In the film, we follow 14-year-old Hani, who dreams of marrying Pushiha. However, in the village, every bride comes with a hefty price tag. Desperate, Hani looks for ways to raise the money, even if it means committing crimes. This heartbreaking, real-life Romeo and Juliet story reflects a harsh truth.

In an on-camera interview, Ohio working girl Mary Clowes explains that she is offering her hand in marriage to whoever can provide $10,000 to support her parents, who have since lost their farm and who, following the deaths of her two brothers, rely on her as their lone source of financial support.

Zeinab, a 13-year-old girl, is forced by her family to marry a 44-year-old man and become pregnant.
