Nearly thirty years after making his surrealist La Formula Secreta, director Rubén Gámez returned to filmmaking with this impressionistic portrait of modern-day Mexico. Reminiscent in some ways of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, Tequila appears to be a cinematic extension of Mexico’s muralist tradition, a contemporary equivalent of Diego Rivera or David Alfaro Siqueiros with vignettes, quick ideas, visual puns, cartoons, and political statements.

Tequila in Mexico, 1940s: Honor and dignity come first here. The town is protecting a certain secret. In spite of all prohibitions, Antonio, a respected young landowner, has an affair with Lola, his uncle Vicent's young wife. She is sexually dissatisfied from her older husband. Also butler's young daughter Milagros is in love with him and sees him when he leaves Lola's room after they had sex. She threatens him to disclose the secret.

In a dark jazz café full of shadowy figures, a mysterious outsider must step out of the shadows to complete his risky mission, knowing that to do so he must confront an old acquaintance.

Things take a strange turn for Johnny and his two buddies when he gets mind reading powers from a medicine man's tequila while on a road trip in Mexico. Johnny must race to save them from the clutches of evil forces... at a deadly party in hell!

A young deputy tries to sober and revitalize a washed up, alcoholic sheriff to take down a pair of warring gangs of criminals in the Old West.
