From the left-overs of the films Henri Plaat made during his many travels, he made this film as an improvisation on deterioration and decay. A world of time passed and nostalgia.

The work for this video began by using an hd camera to collect images of trees using a method involving spinning a camera around in the woods for as long as the body could tolerate (60-90 seconds), and then layering and extending the raw footage in the editing suite. One way to think about the film is of a camera gathering small fragments of time from a forest that exists in larger periods of time, and stretching these moments into something more appropriate to what the trees would experience.

A close up observation of trees in Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer, filmed in single stop frame motion on a clockwork Bolex using a 75mm and 25mm macro lens, where alternating pulsations of 24 still frames per second in image time, translate into optical syncopation. Each reel consists of over 3,500 images with mathematically planned sections, improvised cross rhythms, variations in colour, density, tree species and shape, with sequences following the Fibonacci series (Kren’s ‘Golden Section of film’) and countered with staggered 2:3; 4:3 rhythms. Part scored, part random and rough edged echoing the Japanese musical phenomenon. "wind in the trees"…

I returned to 8mm home movies for this compilation film, shot during the final year of my grandmother's life, and, beginning with footage of her garden. It is a documentary about gradually vanishing equipment collapsing and deteriorating, and also a document of those processes themselves. With the camera picking up details so minute that you can practically smell the pungent odors on the other side of the lens. I continued filming while actually having no idea when the device might reach the end of its life.
