The film tells the story of a teenager Kolya, who, after the death of his mother, finds himself in the village with his grandmother. There they are looking forward to the return of Kolya's father. However, the father does not come, and Kolya and his brother Vanya go to look for him.

The film tells about the life of a small community of Russian Molokans. Representatives of this small religious group are scattered all over the world, but for several centuries they have maintained their authenticity and strong connection with the homeland that once rejected them. Being under strong pressure for a long time, they were unable to maintain their beliefs and reverent attitude to the world, to the people around them. How and why they did it-these are the questions that we will have to find answers to.

This is the story of a Brazilian-Uruguayan family of Old Believers who consider themselves Russian. Alexey Kilin, whose ancestors were once forced to flee from Soviet power to South America, returned to his homeland in the Amur Region and is waiting for his ex-wife Agripina and their son Demyan after 13 years of separation. The attempt at reuniting fails. Nevertheless Agripina decides not to return to Brazil, but to stay in an unfamiliar homeland, in a city with the symbolic name of Svobodny (which means ‘free’ in Russian).

The film focuses on women from a family living in southern Russia: two sisters, their mother, and grandmother. Every summer, the younger women visit the elders, returning to their roots and embracing a traditional way of life. This household is deeply matriarchal—men are present but play secondary roles. The film’s space is filled with rituals: fortune-telling, herb gathering, and bathing. Here, the sacred is intertwined with the mundane. The daughters follow the life paths of their mother, who once traced the steps of the older women in the family.

The story follows Maria Konovalova who travels from her rural village to visit her daughter Nina in the city. Maria's arrival exposes the stark contrasts between rural and urban lifestyles and reveals deep-seated family tensions. Interestingly, Родня (Rodnya) in Russian sounds very similar to the word Родина (Rodina), which means "Motherland." The film features three generations of women — Maria, her daughter Nina, and her granddaughter Irina — symbolizing three different Russias: one from the past, one modern, and one representing the future.
