Tree falls on boy in old America

Karl and Kristina Nilsson work on a farm in a cold and desolate area of 19th century rural Sweden. Growing privations, combined with increasing social and religious persecution, motivate the Nilssons and many of their neighbors to strike out for the United States. Following a treacherous ocean crossing and an equally grueling land passage, the emigrants find themselves in seemingly idyllic Minnesota.

Sweden, 1849. A poverty-stricken family decides to move to America in the hope of finding a better and more prosperous life. Although they know the journey will be dangerous and the pressure of facing a new life in a strange and wild land is great, they are determined to succeed.

Tommy Willis is a boy of 10. Living in poverty and with a nagging hunger, he escapes to the wilderness one day to find solace. He stumbles across a lone, withering apple tree deep in the woods and is horrified by it's condition. It has been vandalized, cut into and the surrounding area littered with evidence of teenage indifference. He resolves to put it right, whatever be the consequences.

A young couple is devastated when their son is killed by a falling tree during a windstorm. As the distraught father begins to look for answers into his son’s death, what appears to be a tragic accident turns out to have been the result of multiple blunders by multiple people.
