The Baader-Meinhof gang, a left-wing terrorist collective born of the student revolutions of the Sixties, terrorized West Germany with a series of bombings, assassinations and hijackings in the Seventies. They became die RAF - die rote army fraktion in 1970. It is claimed that property destruction during the Watts riots in the United States in 1965 influenced the practical and ideological approach of the RAF founders. As for changing the world, they failed. All they achieved was to make West Germany a less tolerant, more paranoid society than it had been before.

In April 1978, members of the Groupe Autonome Révolutionnaire (GAR) rob a bank in Zurich with the aim of bringing to light the covert ties between the Swiss financial system and dictatorships in Latin America. Wanting to secure concrete evidence, they film the entire operation.

The movie is based on the autobiography of Horst Fantazzini. Son of an anarchist, he was known in Northern Italy as “the gentleman bandit” because he robbed banks without violence, with only a toy gun. After many convictions and jailbreaks, in the summer of 1973 he's being held in Fossano, Piedmont when he tries to escape again. This time things get messy and he has to use a real gun and take two prison guards as hostages.
