At the height of the Vietnam war, Captain Benjamin Willard is sent on a dangerous mission that, officially, "does not exist, nor will it ever exist." Young women from the countryside dream of becoming workers in the city of Hanoi. Having travelled far by bus, they find themselves stuck in a limbo between temporary and low-paying jobs even after paying high job agency fees. Stemming from the first Vietnamese edition of French documentary workshop Ateliers Varan, Worker’s Dream exposes the struggle of the working class in a cut-throat capitalistic environment, where profit is synonymous with progress. It attempts to portray female characters as both juggling with their lives and having autonomy through direct interaction with the camera. Walking while they dream and dreaming while they walk, these women bear witness to a seemingly futuristic and bygone Vietnam, and to them, in their words, “(I thought I was lost in) another world.” Worker’s Dream was the debut feature of Trần Phương Thảo, a notable figure of Vietnamese independent documentary following in the cinéma-vérité practice.

Based on a well-known novel of the same title by author Duong Huong, “Wharf of Widows” reflects stories in the context of a rural Village called Dong – a typical North Vietnamese village with bamboo ramparts, communal house roofs, banyan trees and wharves. It was a time when the north hurried to build up the countryside and support the southern battlefield. The movie takes us back to the olden days of peaceful northern villages and women waiting for their men to return from the battlefield. The war robbed the village of healthy strong men leaving behind the women who waited at the water’s edge.

Thanh, Hoang, Phuong, Dinh and Loc, like many around them, carry stubborn scars from the Vietnam War, both in body and mind. They work in the gold mines surrounding their village, or search for landmines along paths previously used by tanks, in order to make ends meet. As they wait out the winter with songs, wine stolen from Loc’s wife, and musings about youth and their own survival, they are haunted by the detonations of bombs being excavated from the village’s soil. Together they reminisce about the war that has defined the boundaries of their lives, though they never fought it.
