All around the world, intersex remains a deep dark secret. And for many intersex persons, it is their life long secret. No one should be forced to hide in shame because their physical development does not follow guidelines dictated by our ideals of 'male' or 'female'. Intersex is a natural biological development. The film is an exploration of the history and science of ambiguous sexual development. We uncover the scientific facts through the voices of biologists, geneticists and researchers. We examine the social implications of their voluntary acceptance within our society.

For many, the world is divided between men and women. But what about intersex people who do not fit into either category? Since Vincent Guillot, as an adult, discovered the word that defines him —intersexual – he has never stopped looking for people like him in an urgent quest to understand himself. The German women artist Ins A Kromminga realised that she was different as a teenager. Born and raised as a girl, her body began to acquire male characteristics in puberty. Her eloquent drawings speak of the trauma that is inflicted on intersex people. With joyful determination and a great sense of humour, the characters in Régine Abadia’s documentary fight for the emancipation of a minority that is invisible and beaten and bruised by life. Their problem: medicine, which intervenes not only to treat, but also to adapt bodies to rigid female or male norms.

Still a taboo in our culture and a point of embarrassment for most men to be caught dating or having sexual relations with trans women. Yet so many men are interested or have experienced the joys of sex with a trans woman it is slowly entering the mainstream consciousness. Four tales exploring various topics from the first timer to the men who are actively dating a secret trans mistress to the man who is embarrassed his friends will find out.

What is the truth about the sexes? It is a deeply-held assumption that every person is either male or female; but many people are now questioning whether this belief is correct. This compelling and sensitive documentary unlocks the stories of people born neither entirely male nor female. Conditions like these have been known as intersex and shrouded in unnecessary shame and secrecy for decades. It's estimated that DSDs (Disorders of Sexual Development) are, in fact, as common as twins or red hair - nearly one in 50 of us. The programme features powerful insights from people living with these conditions, and the medical teams at the forefront of the field, including clinical psychologist Tiger Devore, whose own sex when born was ambiguous.

Director Grant Lahood follows Mani Bruce Mitchell, NZ’s first “out” intersex person, as he/she travels to meet other intersex people living in America, Ireland, Germany, South Africa and Australia. Expatriate Kiwi sexologist Dr John Money of the world renowned Johns Hopkins Medical School believed that gender was the product of “nurture not nature.” His studies into intersex people led to a particular surgical treatment model for babies born with ambiguous genitalia – the idea being that doctors could produce healthy and happy men and women by intervening early in an intersex child’s life. Usually that meant a family secret that had to be kept at all costs. But as the film shows, human sexual development is never that straight forward. This is a heart-warming story told with a mix of laughter and tears in the most frank and revealing way.
