Escaping from his boring and simple life, Hazem succumbs to daydreams where he becomes the opposite — a wealthy, evil person capable of doing anything. Soon, these dreams take over his life, making it impossible for him to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

This unusual short was made while the director was at U.S.C., prior to returning to his native Iran, where he made a few feature films before his untimely death at the age of 48. Cocoon follows a frustrated young black dishwasher who visits adult bookstores and lives a lonely, meager existence. Filmed against a particularly sleazy (and hippie-filled) late-1960s Hollywood. Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called Cocoon "one of the finest serious short films ever made, right up there with Roman Polanski's Two Men and a Wardrobe."

When a group of trespassing seniors swim in a pool containing alien cocoons, they find themselves energized with youthful vigor.

The three human characters are an old man, an old woman, and a young boy, who wander among the natural wonders and give the camera soulful looks.

A girl wakes up alone on a surreal night, with a moth emerging from the TV set guiding her to explore the darkened room. Through a series of emotional flashbacks, she gradually recalls fragmented memories of neglect by her caregivers.

Denied mobility and decision-making power, the metaphorical and physical cocoon embodies political depression.
