Grandmother death is an opportunity for each and everyone to reflect upon mourning, and beyond that, upon life, its multiple forms, its disappearance as well as its inexhaustible resources, and the signs of its infinite diversity. Life’s beauty is in water, mist and foam, in lichens and trees, in this grandmother’s dying face, and in her family’s care, affection and joking, in her children’s every word, every breath.

At the age of 93, my dear grandma tried to commit suicide. I am so afraid that she might go away, but I am spending time with her so as to make our farewell more beautiful and warmer.

She runs back and forth as a drudge between a crying baby, his mother who is on the phone (and wants grandma to refill her coffee) and his father who reads the paper (and continually needs a light). Nobody says anything, but grandma is driven up the wall by the sounds and dreams of a quiet summer's day.
