The basis for the making of this film was a TV show to which many figures of the «youth culture» were invited. Boris Yukhananov turned this into a video project. This plot recurs twice in the film, forming a compositional counterbalance, at the beginning in the guise of a black-and-white television set, and at the end by means of the video action itself. Throughout the entire film we follow a Japanese man who is a kind of medium, a superhero, a bloated ghost of life after death, thus emphasizing the speculative spirit of the huge interest then being paid to «youth culture.» His adventures begin at a lecture podium that is replaced by an autopsy table in a morgue, and they gradually move on to an endless ritual dance with death in its various forms.

Iimura creates a short self-portrait as well as brief portraits of five of his peers: Brakhage, Vanderbeek, Smith, Mekas and Warhol. In each portrait, Iimura attempts to copy the styles and traits of each artist (Vanderbeek's constantly moving camera; Mekas' experiments with film speed; Warhol's use of flashes of white against a black background), while briefly commenting on the images being shown. Mr O’s Book of the Dead is the last of a trilogy of experimental films about Kazuo Ohno, co-founder of the contemporary Japanese style of dance known as butoh, made with director Chiaki Nagano during a period in which he had retired from public performance, and just before he began touring the world as a solo dancer with his celebrated work Admiring La Argentina. In the film, Ohno leads a troupe of strangely dressed, made-up and gesticulating dancers through a succession of landscapes alternately lush, desolate and surreal.

Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru asks his subjects one question: How do you want to die? By following the artist on a journey to create new work, we find that the answers to this question are revealed in the fears and joys of both artist and model.

A love that for a Yakuza-Samurai is strictly forbidden and which will prove to have catastrophic consequences.
