Construction worker Doug Kinney finds that the pressures of his working life, combined with his duties to his wife Laura and daughter Jennifer leaves him with little time for himself. However, he is approached by geneticist Dr. Owen Leeds, who offers Doug a rather unusual solution to his problems: cloning.

In the year 2008, a married couple is distraught over losing their 8 year old son in a boating accident. However, when the mother suddenly sees another child who looks identical to her dead child, the Mother investigates the fertility clinic who aided her with her pregnancy and discovers that they cloned her child in an experiment dubbed "Baby 2000". She also discovers that they still have the genes to develop another child for them and faces the question of whether the couple wants another identical child.

Pool is a melange of documentary and fiction, about its actors’ lives: a 14-year old girl, a Chilean exile, a French actress and an unfulfilled shoestore manager. No plot runs through it, but the characters all move in and out of their roles. When we get too close, we are reminded It’s only a movie. The young girl who appears at the beginning of the film is Ally Sheedy at fourteen. She has since appeared in many feature films including The Breakfast Club and High Art.
