Four people and a dead girl stand in a room of a building. They were chased by someone and gathered here by chance.

In the wake of a worldwide disaster that brought war and disease to Los Angeles, a group of strangers seeks shelter from a severe windstorm. The irony is, they might have been safer had they chosen to stay out in the elements. Lurking inside the shelter with them is something far more dangerous than the chaos waiting outside.

A fierce dust storm blankets a vast and infertile desert. From under the sand and debris emerge four figures. Two survive and make their way across the desert, following a thin trail of smoke rising in the distance. Near dead, the mysterious strangers approach the home of Caleb Williams, a humble tailor seeking refuge from his wife's brutal murder. He takes them in and nurses them back to health, suppressing an unsettling recognition of the peculiar wounds marking their backs. In a nearby town, a desperate priest is approached by a familiar stranger. Unable to deny his horrific request, the priest accompanies him into the barren desert. Their journey will reveal not only the truth surrounding the death of the tailor's only love, but the presence of a much greater evil awakened in the desert wind.

Some time after a mysterious weather event caused a cloud of sand from a faraway desert to settle over an unnamed city, this miasma of dust shows no sign of lifting. Clogging up the eyes and choking off the horizon, it has become a fact of everyday life. In a nondescript apartment somewhere in the city, a woman convenes a gathering at which a group of young people are present. Like every young generation, they are a repository of hope for the future – albeit a future that seems equally murky and obscured.

A great wind blows around the world and seven years after the beginning of the end of civilization, people, water and food are scarce until a stranger appears one day.
